15 TH NNPC/NAOC - GRP FARMERS’ DAY CELEBRATION AND LAUNCHING OF 2011 FARMING SEASON

The NNPC/NAOC – GRP Farmers’ Day is an annual event that has been on for the past 15 years. This occasion marks the beginning of a new farming season for the Farmers that have been in partnership with NNPC/ NAOC/Phillips 66 JV in various aspects of agriculture, ranging from training on various aspects of crop production to produce preservation, researches and farming implements and tools.

Farmers as a result of this partnership are encouraged to form cooperatives amongst the communities in the states of Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Imo for the purpose accessing the platform provided by the JV.

This partnership has enabled the benefitting communities to generate a total income of about 25.6 million Naira through the various schemes. This indeed is a partnership that works.

Although it is the launching of a new farming season, deserving farmers as a result of their 2010 performances were rewarded with cash and /or farming tools.

The occasion afforded the farmers the platform to display their produce and for some products, explanations were given on how the products can be used. Of particular  interest is the Coconut oil which we were told is medicinal, also the container used for preserving fresh vegetables as shown in the Pictures.

It is interesting to note therefore, that the Green Rivers Projects has contributed a lot in the Economic empowerment of the communities in the states involved; also this project has increased the social and economic activities of the people of these communities across ages and social strata.

It is safe therefore, to say that the Corporate Social Responsibilities of the NNPC/NAOC/PHILLIPS 66 needs to be strongly encouraged so that the success recorded will sustain the peace and quietness in the communities. There is no doubt the goal of empowering oil producing communities for sustained socio economic growth its people is yielding positive results.

I therefore, urge other Joint ventures to partner with their various communities in this direction in order to engage the communities in meaningful economic activities.
