The NNPC/MPNU joint venture as part of its sustainable development to its host Communities have been at the forefront of providing effective and efficient Community based human and infrastructural development activities.
These well applauded initiatives are based on the harmonious relationship existing between the host Communities and the joint venture.
The joint venture sees the host Communities as part and parcel of its operation. This symbiotic relationship has fostered a better understanding of the needs and wants of the host Communities.
With the host Communities in mind as its assets, the joint venture has continually made substantial contributions to the provision and maintenance of sustainable projects in the areas of Health, Education, Economic Empowerment/capacity building, Sports, Electricity, Roads and Water supply among others to their host Communities.
Indeed, it has been a "send down the projects" in the host Communities of the NNPC/MPNU joint venture operational Communities.
The joint venture within the last twenty four months has executed and commissioned 36 Community assistance projects valued at over N 550 Million in thirteen Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State.
These Projects which cuts across many facets of community life such as Water, Roads, Education, Health, Economic empowerment/Capacity building were aimed at developing and empowering the Communities were the joint venture operates.
Speaking at the commissioning flag off ceremony of these projects held at Ibeno LGA secretariat and Oron civic centre. The Group General Manager, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), Engr. M. A. Fiddi represented by Mr. Wilson Udoh appealed to Community Projects contractors to always expedite action on Project execution to enable benefitting Communities derive desired benefits.
The GGM NAPIMS, Engr. Fiddi enjoined the Communities to take over the ownership of the Projects and as such strive to protect and maintain the Projects.
It was noted that the joint venture contributed N 19.8 Billion in 2009 to the Niger Delta Development Commission in 2009 and over all has contributed N 59.2 Billion to the commission between 2001 and 2009.
Among the projects undertaken by the joint venture as part of its Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR) are:
1. Economic empowerment/Capacity building
The joint venture in partnership with the Akwa Ibom State Government conceptualized and nurtured the Graduate Assistance Programme (GAP)
The GAP is aimed at improving the employability and entrepreneurial capacity of unemployed graduates in Akwa Ibom State by providing information and communication technology (ICT) skills and enterprise development training.
Over 250 unemployed graduates have completed their training under the GAP, out of which over 70% have secured gainful employment.
Similarly, the joint venture embarked on a fish preservation project in Eastern Obolo LGA. The 30-ton cold room will minimize waste catches encountered by the fishermen and add value to the local economy and generate income to the fishermen group.
The joint venture has provided solar-powered water Project and treatment plant at Okoroette, the headquarters of Eastern Obolo LGA.
Also the joint venture has commissioned Information Communication Technology centres in Ibeno, Eket, Esit Eket and Onna LGA's respectively. These centres were undertaken as pre-requisite Projects aimed at reducing the world to a global village and in Nigerian Governments quest to be one of the 20 biggest economies in 2020.
The communities were reminded that the centres were capable of turning the economic and social fortunes of the benefitting Communities around and as such the Communities should use the centres to update their knowledge and skills.
2. Electricity Projects
While Iwuochang and Upenekang Communities were provided with electricity upgrade Projects, a transformer was procured and installed for AfahaUqua Obok Iduim.
Also electricity upgrade project was carried out along Udoumoh street/SDP road, Eket.
3. Education Projects
The joint venture other than the regular construction, rehabilitation and provision of other educational amenities to the host Communities went further to introduce the Mobil Employee Voluntary Education Programme (MEVEP).
The MEVEP is aimed at improving the standard of education in the joint ventures areas of operation. This laudable programme involves the MPNU employees and spouses devoting their private time along with other volunteers to teach and mentor over 1,000 participating students drawn from 22 secondary schools in five centres located in Ibeno, Eket, Esit Eket and Onna LGA's. The subjects covered by the programme include, Mathematics, English language, Government, Economics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agricultural science.
The joint venture in its pragmatic approach to communal needs also renovated an Assembly Hall at QIC Secondary School, Eket LGA, the construction of principals quarters and girls hostel at the senior science school, Ndon Eyo, Onna LGA.
Similarly, the joint venture constructed the teachers quarters at Ebughu Community Secondary School, Mbo LGA and provided water and sanitation facilities at Christain Technical College Oyubia, Urueoffong/Oruko LGA.
4. Sport Projects
The joint venture has un-relently sponsored the synonymous NNPC/Mobil Track and Field championship for 21 years now. (1989-2010).
The NNPC/Mobil Track and Field championship is an annual invitational tournament where indigenous sportsman and women, local and foreign based athletes compete to represent the country in international tournaments.
Besides the sponsorship of the track and field championship, the joint venture completed a Golf-course at Marina road and Inyang Uma T-off.
5. Road Construction Projects
The joint venture completed the concrete drains on Marina Plaza Road in Inua Eyet Ikot and undertook the construction of various roads in Eket, Ibeno, Esit Eket and Onna LGA's.
6. Health Projects
In its strive to provide quality healthcare to the host Communities. The joint venture donated medical equipments worth N 2.4 Million to primary health centres in Ibeno and Onna LGA's.
The joint venture in addition to the support given the Nigerian Malaria Control and Prevention Programme (NMCPP) aimed at educating the people on the prevention and control of malaria especially in pregnant women and children under the age of five years also offers free dental and ophthalmic surgeries and services, including the distribution of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLITN's) Despite this, the joint venture completed the renovation of main ward and doctors quarters at Polyclinic Ukpenekang, the contruction of a block at the Atabrikang Health centre, and the construction of a block at Ikwe health centre, Onna LGA and fully equipped and refurbished the Finima health centre Finima Rivers state.
Over all, it has been accolade galore from the youths, Community and state Government over the unquivering Sustainable Development Projects in the host communities by the joint venture. We cannot but say WELL DONE, WELLDONE, WELLDONE!!! to the NNPC/MPNU joint venture.
